Basics of Ammunition

Ammunition is the complete cartridge unit that provides the firearm with its projectile, propellant energy, and ignition system. Every modern firearm depends on ammunition as the central component that determines performance, range, accuracy, recoil, and terminal effect. Understanding ammunition is critical for studying internal ballistics, firearm design, and tactical application.

What is Ammunition?

Ammunition is any expendable material used in combat or firearms firing systems, but in small arms, it mainly refers to:

Cartridges (complete rounds of ammunition)

A cartridge is a self-contained package consisting of:

  • Bullet (projectile)

  • Cartridge case

  • Propellant powder

  • Primer ignition system

Anatomy of a Cartridge (4 Main Parts)

1. Bullet (Projectile)

The bullet is the component that exits the barrel and strikes the target.

Types of Bullets:

  • Full Metal Jacket (FMJ)

  • Hollow Point (HP)

  • Soft Point (SP)

  • Armor Piercing (AP)

  • Tracer

Bullet shape and weight strongly affect penetration, velocity, and terminal ballistics.

2. Cartridge Case

The case holds all the components together.

Case Functions:

  • Seals the chamber (obturation)

  • Holds propellant safely

  • Supports feeding and extraction

Case Materials:

  • Brass (most common)

  • Steel (cheap military use)

  • Polymer (modern lightweight trials)

3. Propellant (Gunpowder)

Propellant generates high-pressure gas that pushes the bullet forward.

Types:

  • Smokeless powder (modern standard)

  • Single-base (nitrocellulose)

  • Double-base (nitrocellulose + nitroglycerin)

Propellant burn rate determines pressure curve and muzzle velocity.

4. Primer (Ignition System)

Primer is the spark element that ignites the powder charge.

Primer Types:

  • Boxer primer (common civilian)

  • Berdan primer (common military surplus)

When struck by the firing pin, the primer creates a flame jet into the powder chamber.

Cartridge Classifications

Rim Type

Cartridges are classified based on rim design:

  • Rimmed (e.g., .357 Magnum)

  • Rimless (e.g., 9×19mm)

  • Semi-rimmed

  • Rebated rim

Rim type affects feeding reliability in magazines.

Centerfire vs Rimfire

Rimfire

  • Primer compound inside rim

  • Low pressure

  • Example: .22 LR

Centerfire

  • Primer at center base

  • High pressure, reloadable

  • Example: 5.56×45mm NATO

Caliber vs Cartridge Designation

Many beginners confuse caliber with cartridge.

Caliber = bore diameter

Example: 7.62 mm

Cartridge = full specification

Example: 7.62×51mm NATO

Same caliber can have many cartridges:

  • 7.62×39

  • 7.62×51

  • 7.62×54R

All different in power, case size, and purpose.
